Installing ExamView

Getting Started with ExamView

Use ExamView to create assessment questions and tests for your students.  The ExamView Assessment Suite is comprised of the Test Generator, Test Manager, and Test Player. Use the Test Generator to create and manage assessment items, study guides, and tests. Use the Test Manager to view reports of test results. Your students can use the Test Player to take tests that have been placed on a local area network (LAN).

To start ExamView (Windows), click Start, All Programs, and ExamView Pro Test Generator, then select the ExamView application you want to use: ExamView Player, ExamView Test Generator, or ExamView Test Manager.

To start ExamView (Mac), launch the application from the icon of the ExamView application that you want to use (ExamView Test Generator, ExamView Player, or ExamView Test Manager) from your Dock, Desktop, or Finder window.

To find out more about the applications in the ExamView Assessment Suite, access Help from the ExamView application menu bar.

Does ExamView work with response devices?

Yes. With pads (such as eInstruction and Turning Point), students can "beam up" their responses and the system will automatically record their grades.

Do I need to install a standalone "player" for ExamView like I do for some of the other components of One-Stop Planner?

No, the player is included in the standard installation of ExamView.

How does the "Translate Test" command work?

When you choose to "translate" a test, ExamView Test Generator automatically builds a new test using an alternate language question bank. The software does not actually translate a test. It simply finds and selects the matching questions from the alternate question bank(s).

Important: The Translate Test command appears in the menu only if the publisher-prepared banks include banks for multiple languages (e.g., English and Spanish)

If I add additional, or modify existing questions, will the "Translate Test" command still work?

 • For best results, do not edit any questions or add new ones to the publisher-supplied question banks. If, for example, you edit a question in an English question bank, the equivalent question in the Spanish bank is not updated. This same rule applies for new questions you add to a question bank.

 • Any changes you make to questions on a test or new questions you add will not be reflected in a "translated" test. If you edit a question on a test, it is necessary to make the same edits once the "translated" test appears.

 • If you want to add your own questions, create a completely new question bank. When you build a test that includes your own questions, the program will not be able to "translate" those questions. ExamView Test Generator will display a message letting you know if it could not "translate" some of the questions. You can then manually add those questions to the test.

 • If you accidentally change a question bank, it may be best to re-install the software and the question banks. You may need to delete any question bank files you changed for the installer to correctly update the question bank files.

 • Once installed, do not change the folder names for the question banks as the program may not be able to locate the alternate language files.

What is dynamic content?

Through the use of built-in algorithmic functions, keywords, and variables, ExamView Test Generator allows instructors and publishers to create dynamic questions. Algorithms allow infinite customization of a test question using mathematical definitions. For example, with a single click a math instructor can print multiple versions of the same test, with the software automatically calculating new values for every question and answer.

Through the use of mathematical, string, and special functions along with the ability to create custom functions, dynamic content can be created for any subject area.

What is a bi-modal question?

With the appropriate meta-data behind it, a question can be written as a multiple choice question or a short answer question. The teacher can convert the question from short-answer to multiple choice, and vice versa, by pressing the icon on the menu bar.
